Permalink reply by tomsantiquesetcetera on april 10, 2012 at 5:12pm Re-Wiring an old lamp to make it work is alright as long as vintage equipment, wire, etc., is used. But to replace the sockets with new ones, was not a wise idea. Also by using brasso you removed almost 100 years of patina, and patina is what makes it desirable! I also don't think your finial is correct; It's too large.Lampshade finials are slender.I think yours was used on a ceiling fixture.Hole size/threading is the same.I just noticed your wire and it is newer too.Circa 1960s-70s.Should be the old round, fuzzy wire. Tiffany co.Was stamped on their lamps and on their shades. No mark, means it is not a tiffany. There are many copies and reproductions of shades. They can be purchased on line for $25.And up.Thrift stores have lots of shades, antique stores, lighting shops, etc. In it's current condition i would value your lamp, if working, without a shade, at $20-40.Usd. Thanks for the reply.I understand what you are saying about replacing parts and Cheap Tiffany Pendants brasso. The electrical repair had to be made, no idea how or where i would get the sockets i need in good order, so thought i was doing the best thing by getting new ones. The hardware store had just the inner part of the socket, the outer shell i reused, there is only the small"Bell"Where the chain comes out that looks wrong. The lamp works now.The cord was like that when i got it, yes i had the impression it was newer than the lamp. Interested in knowing what style shade you would use. Permalink reply by vicki hufstetler on april 11, 2012 at 2:02pm Find craig on here-B emporium-He carries all old hardware to bring your lamp back to it's original state-Also No brasso-That's a big No-No!The only old metal that is safe to clean is silver-And even then it's complacated. Look on ebay for"Slag glass shade"And you will see a whole array of what should be on your lamp-Try purchasing an original one to match your lamp-Then you will have a beautiful and valueable piece.Antiques are great-But you have to be a good stewart of them. : ) Permalink reply by sherry miller on april 11, 2012 at 9:09pm Dan, the particular design of that shade is not one i've seen before. In your shoes, i would decide first:Do you want to restore it or simply make the most of a pretty lamp? When it comes to picking among designs, 1)The length has to be right 2)Colors that suit your taste 3)Vertical lines to play off the lines and chevrons on your lamp 4)Eeps!Does it fit your budget? Permalink reply by dan gillitzer on april 12, 2012 at 4:54am Thanks for all the input.Yeah that's quite a bit more than i am willing to pay, plus i don't want an unused base.If they would sell just the shade maybe the price would be in line, but we all know the shade is the priciest part, not the base.I'll keep an eye on ebay for a shade, there is one i am"Watching"Now that is more like $100, i have to check the size out though.Only thing i am uncertain of is if the center of the shade has to be a particular design to work with the flat top of the base? Can it have a peak to it, or does it have to bethe type with the large open circle on top?
